Yeah, I Said It: I Have An 18-Month-Old, Not A One-And-A-Half-Year-Old

Humnoy was born 18 months ago today. I’ve always celebrated and noted his monthday, the 13th, because babies develop so much within a month. I’ve always referred to his age in terms of months. Always have, always will… until when though?

There’s a whole lot of hate surrounding the politically correct way to state a child’s age. Sure, you have preschoolers who are usually 3-4 and then you get to the 10-year-olds. You would never say, “Oh, she actually started doing that when she was 120 months.” So, why would you call a preschool-age kid 38 months? Why would I call Humnoy 18 months rather than say his now-official title of being a “year-and-a-half?”

Saying ’18-month-old’ is way quicker than to say ‘one-and-a-half-year-old.’ Then again, saying a ‘year-old’ is faster than saying 12 months. I am a lazy person so anything that doesn’t require exertion in speaking, I will take that route. I also do not like to fib. If I kept saying Humnoy is one-and-a-half in a three months, that’s simply not true. He’d actually be one-and-three-quarter years old or, my personal fave, 21 months! People get really annoyed when hearing an older baby’s age in months but I’m not going to waste my extra energy saying something that either isn’t true or too long. So, deal.

Happy one-and-a-half years 18 months alive and kicking, Humnoy!

Honorable Humnoy mentions:
– He is still nursing.
– His new words are baaaiii (“bye”) and “foot”
– He loves basketball, climbing, and chasing after birds from across the parking lot.

What do you say? When is the cut-off date for saying age in months?

  1. This is very random…but I love the truck in the back of the photo of him playing on the slide with the ‘merican flag. Very Basin City…not Seattle! lol. Sorry, just had to say it. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • I know! It sounds like your life was not too different from mine five years ago so sometimes I think back and wonder what 2007 Allison thinks of this lady who is taking much better care of her life now!

      • Yes, 2010 Me was drinking (heavily) at my cousin’s wedding the month I surprisingly conceived and was about 4-6 weeks along with Humnoy. I had not a clue!

Babies sure change everything I ever thought I knew, good and the bad. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  2. My cutoff is 23 months. On their second birthday I start saying “He’s two.” and then six months later, “He’s two and a half.” Between birth and the age of 2 there IS a big difference from month to month, but that starts changing when they’re around 2. ๐Ÿ™‚
